Books in Review - 2008 Edition

Well, I'm not going to make my goal of 12,000 pages read, but I did read more than last year.  I managed to get over 10K, so 85% of my goal isn't too bad.

Since, there is no need to read like crazy for the rest of the night, here's this year's accomplishment:

2008 Reading List )
So I got sucked into Twilight.  I will blame it on the fact that I went to high school with Stephanie Meyer (nee Morgan).  I also was majorly sidetracked with reading and researching  financial books.  And since I'm making excuses here, I was a fool to think that I could get through War and Peace (which would have put me over 12k) in ten days.

Recommendations from this year include What it Takes, Fahrenheit 451, Sophie's Choice and The Tightwad Gazette.

I'm in the middle of a number of books.  I got really distracted this year and  lost focus on "The List" but I'm not that worried about it.   I did manage to get 14 from the list read and at one point this year I hit 33.33% finished.  That was a decent milestone.

On my nightstand and currently reading:

War and Peace -Tolstoy
The Weekend Millionaire Mind-Set  -  Summey and Rodgers
The One-Minute Millionaire  - Allen and Hansend
The Frugal Duchess - Rosenberg
The Rainbow - DH Lawrence
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - Shaffer and Barrows

Up next: Ender's Game  - I hear it's great.

I'm bumping up next year's goal to 15k pages read.  Even though I didn't meet the 12K from this year, with more focus I know I could have.

I read Fahrenheit 451 today (with an important Afterward and Coda). It is phenomenal and terrifying. In a sense, we are living the book right now.

I saw this on another post that said that the publishers believe that the average adult has only read 6 of the 100 books on this list. Finally, I'm above average on something!

Bold = read it
Underline  = loved it
italics = intend to read

Done.

I don't have too much to say about it, actually.  I think I understand why it's rated as one of the top 100 books of all time.  It's an experiment in style, form and language, right?  What I don't get is why that particular novel is regarded so highly and something that I might write, in a similar (nonsensical) form, would not be.  Maybe [info]piefessorcould shed some light on that??  I'm not suggesting that I'm a brilliant writer, but what makes Ulysses so great?  Much of the book makes very little sense.  I grew very frustrated with it - many times.

To be honest, I'm just glad to say that I finished it.  I needed a lot of help from Sparknotes to understand all that was going on, but I read every one of the 783 pages and I'm fairly proud of that.

Thank God! A new book!

I just started Moby Dick.  From the first paragraph, I was hooked, no pun intended.  What an incredible piece of writing this is!!  I have wondered if my love for this book has anything to do with the fact that I just put down Ulysses,  for the second time.  Good God, that book sucks.   Three years ago, I got to about page 200, put it down and said I'd finish it later.  I vowed this would be the year.  I gave it a week, got through another 80 pages and decided that Ulysses is best done in small doses - two pages at a time a couple times through the day.  I can't do any more - that book makes no fucking sense to me.  At this point, I'm only reading the words, many of which are nonsensical.  It might be high literature, but not for this chica.

I'm surprised how many Judy Blume books are on this list.  People really need something better to do with their time.

Harry Potter Overload?

Impossible.

We went to see the OOTP a second time last night.  I liked it MUCH better the second time, which could be because I wasn't half asleep for the whole movie. I_heart_Gary Oldman.

Getting caught up and ready by listening to Books 5 and 6 on CD.  (If you haven't heard them read by Tim Dale, you're really missing out.  He is wonderful.)

Got my Deathly Hallows pre-paid and now I'm just waiting...waiting...waiting...

I have resolved that I will not be looking at the internet or TV until I've finished reading it because I refuse to have it ruined for me.

After this what it there to look forward to?  Two more movies and a theme park.

Overload? I don't think so, but I am beginning to wonder what will take its place.  When is the last time a book got this many people reading, thinking and talking - not to mention the age differences of all the fans.  It's a pretty awesome thing; even if you hate the books and all that comes with it, you can't deny the huge impact they've had.

I am both excited and sad, with a little bit of nervous, about this news.  I don't want Harry to die but I also don't want him to lose his powers.  I wonder how she's decided to end it all.

Rowling: New 'Harry Potter' due July 21 - USATODAY.com

I have to look for another children's series to read, I think.  Has anyone read the His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman?

2007 Reading List

  • Dec. 31st, 2006 at 9:42 PM
Alcatraz
I normally don't plan what I'm going to read. I've tried it in the past, and it seems that I rebel against myself. I usually just pick something that sounds good at the time. However, that often translates into 350-ish page books. I avoid long books because I tend to try to read a lot of books in one year. This year, I've decided that it's high time to tackle the big monsters on my list. (Well, at least some of them.) I've compiled a list of the long books (500+ pages) that I have in my library and these will be what I read this year. I've added some smaller books in an effort to mix things up and to maintain my sanity. The majority of my list are 500+ page books.

Just so I don't have to keep a slip of paper all year...

Year in Review: 2006 Books

I joined [info]50bookchallenge and 15000pages this year in hopes that I would be able to complete the challenge. I set a personal goal of 30 books however, because I knew that 50 would be a stretch for me. Up until this year 24 was the most number of books that I have read, so 30 would be a personal best and I would be satisfied with that.
I am happy to say that this afternoon, I finished my 30th book!!! For the year, I have read 20 off my list, and 10 not on my list, which is a pretty good feat. My per month average was the highest ever too, at 2.5 books per month. Number of pages? 9271.

I realize that this appears that I'm making a sport of reading because of the stats I keep, but I have been working on this lifetime reading list for a number of years. How I progress through it is very interesting to me.

Book Passage

Tonight I was able to do something I never imagined I'd get to do. My sister and I met my favorite author in the whole world - Margaret Atwood!! It was so incredibly exciting to hear her read a chapter from her newest book, Moral Disorder. She did about 45 minutes of Q&A and then did the book signing. I bought the new book and brought my copy of The Handmaid's Tale (which is one of my 4 favorite books ever). I spoke with her for a couple minutes, but there were a lot of people there to see her, so I didn't hang around long.

Lolita

I find this book to be rather loathsome. I have a hard time reading it for long stretches. I didn't realize that the main character was not just in love with, fascinated by or infatuated with one young girl. He is an outright pedophile and  his fantasies and ploys are revolting; compound that with the fact that Lolita is not 16 or so, she's 12. I'm only able to read about 5-6 pages at a time and then I have to put it down for a bit.

However, it is a beautifully written book.

"Most of the dandelions had changed from suns to moons."

Lolita is full metaphors like that.  But it makes me wonder... if this were a love story about people of appropriate ages would it be considered as much of an accomplishment as it is today.  If I'm really honest with myself, I think that it would be boring  no matter how beautifully written.  The taboo subjects make it more interesting because the reader is allowed a glimpse into perverse thoughts that an ordinary person wouldn't normally have.  It's a clear portrait of some madness that elicits strong, albeit negative, emotions and that, in addition to the quality of the writing,  is what makes it noteworthy in my opinion.

Good Lord, I love these books. I have no idea why. If these were around when I was 13 or so, I would have gobbled them up just the same way I am now.
I just finished the third installment; sad all the way because this is the last book and I was hoping that there would be a detailed epilogue at the end, so you find out where all the girls are and what they are doing. There is no such epilogue which prompted some internet searching. There will be a FOURTH book - YIPPEEEE!!! I really think that this one will be the last, but it's still coming and I have it to look forward to - January 2007.

So, after the fourth book in January, I only have to wait 6 months for The Order of the Phoenix movie... Must look for the release date of the 7th HP book...

What am I going to do when this is all over?

Book Meme

1. Total Number of Books I’ve Owned:

This is a ridiculous question. How can I possibly answer it? All I can say is that I own 114 books "on my list" and 29 other books that are not on my list that I've read over the last few years. Contrary to popular belief, I do not have every book I own or have ever owned cataloged and filed away in accordance with the Dewey Decimal System. (For those of you who aren't in the know: I have a lifetime reading list that I am working on. It is extensively organized in a spreadsheet and is very much a living document. I heart Excel... big time.)

Besides, this question doesn't even take into account Lenny's books. I "own" those too, right. And what about my childhood books? Really and truly a dumb question. At least for me. For my dad? Less than 10. (I'm guessing, but I don't think I'm far off.)

2. Last Book I Bought:

Walden
Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
Strunk and White's Elements of Style

3. Last Book I Read:

See last post: French Lieutenant's Woman

But to make it more interesting, the last five are:

The Bridge of San Luis Rey ---> Didn't like this one too much
Hotel du Lac --------> Good LORD, I hated this book. How it won a Booker Prize, I'll never know.
The Second Summer of the Sisterhood
A Separate Peace
Heavenly Humor

4. Five Books That Mean A Lot To Me:

The Grapes of Wrath
The Handmaid's Tale
Gone with the Wind
To Kill a Mockingbird
Any Harry Potter - you pick because I can't

5. Tag five people and have them do this on their blog:

As much as I'd like to read everyone else's responses, I refuse to put anyone under that kind of pressure. There's too much other shit to worry about in the world.
